Avani Lekhara, Bhavina Patel travels to award ceremony in specially designed accessible vehicles

New Delhi: Para shooter Avani Lekhara has made the country proud by winning two medals at the recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Another Indian athlete, Bhavina Patel, won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Para Games in table tennis. He was nominated for the prestigious Arjuna Award this year. In addition to Avan’s honors and medals, Bhavina discusses her pain and problems because she is also a wheelchair athlete. Svayam, a charity that promotes access for people of different abilities, then helped top athletes and give them a smooth ride safely to the Rashtrapati Bhava National Awards on Saturday.

Svayam with its specially designed machines makes wheelchairs accessible directly to the car, thus eliminating the confusion often encountered by these players when traveling.

“These vehicles have been a great revelation and understand the needs of athletes in wheelchairs. We have to wear sarees for the task and without these vehicles it would have been almost impossible to be in uniform. It’s a start and I hope it sends the message that we need an accessible environment for everyone, ”Avani says.

“Svayam not only supplied these vehicles, but also made accessible rooms for wheelchair users at the Ashok Hotel where we stayed.” said Bhavina Patel, winner of the Arjuna Prize.
