Spider-Man star Willem Dafoe believes criticism of the original Green Goblin mask was the reason for his character’s change of look in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In an interview with The New York Times, the 66-year-old Spider-Man villain revealed why he believes the classic Green Goblin costume has been altered, with the character breaking his once-controversial mask shortly after. after his first appearance in the new film.
“I have to be honest, I am aware that there have been criticisms about this [Green Goblin] mask in original [Sam Raimi Spider-Man], “he said.” We’ve heard it enough that it’s probably a consideration, to change it a bit. YES NO
Dafoe initially took on the mantle of Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002. And with his character’s return, Dafoe had previously hinted that the Green Goblin would get an upgrade in No Way Home.
This new look saw the Green Goblin lose his mask entirely, instead making a (slightly) more realistic portrayal of Norman Osborn as Marvel’s hooded villain. But Dafoe said he also made sure his appearance wasn’t just a cameo.
“When [producer] Amy Pascal and [director] Jon Watts called me and said we would like to present this idea to you, I thought, “This is crazy. But let’s see what they have to say,” Dafoe recalled. “I really didn’t want to. not doing a cameo. I wanted to make sure there was something pretty substantial to do that wasn’t just a tip of the hat. And the other thing was I said I I really wanted there to be action – I want to be in action scenes. Because it’s really fun for me. It’s the only way to anchor the character.
8 amazing Spider-Man teams
Dafoe stars alongside Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, joined by former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. He also sees the return of other iconic villains such as Electro (Jamie Foxx), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), The Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church). But while the final act turned out to be a momentous event, it was originally intended to be a post-credit scene.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has since become Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time, with a staggering $ 257 million opening weekend.
