SPARTANBURG, SC Western Carolina’s Brie Mapanao has been selected as the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competitions from Oct. 12-18. The selection is made by the league office.
Mapanao posted a career-best runner-up finish with a 5-over-par 221 at the Buccaneer Classic Hosted by Charleston Southern in Goose Creek, South Carolina, at the par-72, 6,185-yard Crowfield Golf Club. The freshman jumped to the top of the individual Leaderboard on Monday after posting a 2-over 74 in the first round with a pair of birdies and four bogeys before firing another round of 2-over 74 in the second with three consecutive birdies to sit in a two-way tie for sixth at 4-over 148. Mapanao closed out the event with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to claim the runner-up spot and finish only one stroke back of medalist Caroline Engelbredt of Charleston Southern. The Quakers Hill, New South Wales, Australia, native averaged 73.67 strokes through three rounds and finished with 34 pars and nine birdies throughout the tournament. Mapanao collected her fourth top-10 finish of her freshman campaign, which includes a third-place showing at the Aggie Invitational, a sixth-place tie at the Jennifer Duke Invitational, and a seventh-place tie at the Jupiter Women’s Invitational.
Western Carolina finished second in the 10-team field, completing the tournament with a 37-over 901 performance. The Catamounts shot 300 in the first round, 292 in the second, and 309 in the final round, securing wins over Illinois State (+46), UNC Asheville (+79), Gardner-Webb (+89) and Radford (+96 ).
This marks Mapanao’s first Weekly Honor of the season and the first of her career. She is the second Catamount to earn the league’s Weekly award this fall, joining Madison Isaacson who earned the Honor on Oct. 5.
Western Carolina closed out its fall campaign at the Buccaneer Classic and will return to action on Monday, Feb. 13, and Tuesday, Feb. 14, as the team travels to Charleston, South Carolina, to compete in The Citadel’s Oyster Shuck Match Play at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
