Kansas high school basketball fans accused of racist behavior

During a game between two Kansas high schools — Topeka High and Valley Center High School — Valley Center fans and students are accused of making racist comments about Topeka High basketball players, according to reports.

A Topeka High student posted a pair of videos on Facebook. One of the videos shows Valley Center fans holding a black baby doll. In the second, fans chant “he’s ap***y” to a Topeka player shooting free throws.

KSN News spoke to Topeka High head coach Geo Lyons and he said his players heard racial slurs from the crowd.

It was my son who was on the free-throw line when the chant, Hes could a** there started,” Lyons said. “The N-word was used and thrown all over the place, you know, our kids were told they were going to be hanged. I had a locker room downstairs, I’m talking about tears falling in that locker room.”

The student who posted the videos on Facebook also said she heard racial slurs.

“They were chanting names to our players in the student section, and we also heard that we were called the N-word as well,” she said, according to KSN.

Valley Center investigation fails to prove racism claims

The school district investigated but could not substantiate the alleged racist language. They released a statement about it.

“During a hard-fought men’s basketball game between Valley Center High School and Topeka High School on Saturday, December 3, fans on both sides became very vocal and involved,” the statement read.

“The Principals of Valley Center High School, Ms. Melissa Seacat and Mr. Chris Asmussen, have done their best to handle the reported situations, especially those involving some students in the student section of Valley Center. Near the end of the game, a Topeka player was fouled, and when he went to shoot his free throws, an inappropriate chant of Hes a Pu** broke out there from the VCHS student section.

“The administration immediately began removing the students involved and shifted to a proactive mode to avoid any further negative interactions at the end of the game; an off-duty police officer also helped ensure that everyone left the game immediately after the end.

“As part of a class at VCHS, a student who was assigned a baby simulator for a human growth and development class brought the ‘baby’ with her to the game. The mission requires nurturing, changing diapering, rocking and generally caring for the “baby”, all close to the student’s “parent” for a few days.

“The students’ grade is based on the care of the child as recorded by an internal electronic device. Based on a review of the videos, the baby was passed between students during play. Although the baby was not intentionally brought in as a prop to taunt or threaten Topeka High School, without context, seeing the “baby” and the images of the “baby” caused pain and concern to many, and we we’re really sorry about that.

The statement went on to list the steps that have been taken to move forward. One said that “VCHS and the administration of Topeka High School are working together to investigate allegations of racial slurs. As of this morning (12/6), the administration of both schools have not found no evidence that such remarks were made during or after the basketball game.

He also said, “As requested by the local chapter of the NAACP, we are meeting this morning to talk about what happened and how best to move forward.”

Valley Center High School in Kansas forced to close for a day due to threats

Valley Center canceled all classes on Wednesday, and superintendent Dr. Cory L. Gibson sent a statement to students’ families. KWCH, a local news station, obtained the statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution for all of our students and staff and after consultation with local law enforcement, all $262 buildings and schools will be closed and all activities will be canceled for tomorrow December 7, 2022. Staff members are not report to work unless specifically requested by their supervisor,” the statement read.

“The difficult decision to close our schools is the result of online threats received by our district tonight. Law enforcement is investigating these threats. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you and your family. We will share an update via email by tomorrow afternoon.

Valley Center High in Kansas was forced to close for a day due to threats.

Andale, the Kansas high school that was scheduled to host Valley Center for a boys’ basketball game on Friday night, released a set of guidelines that will be in place for that game.

“Due to recent events, in order to provide the safest environment for student activities, protocols have been established for Friday night games against Valley Center,” the statement read. “Please review the processes that have been established below to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in their activities and we keep all students and customers safe.”

Guidelines include only one entrance available for play, students must show ID to enter, all children below high school age must sit with parents/families, loitering is not permitted in parking and security will be present.
