A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin gives a heartbreaking Christmas update amid her final cancer battle

Johnny Irwin has revealed that he doesn’t tell his kids that it will probably be his last birthday.

The 49-year-old A Place in the Sun host was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020 and has only been given months to live.

Johnny is determined to make memories with his family

But Johnny and his wife Jess plan to give their children – Rex, who will be four on Christmas Day, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.

Asked if his children understood how sick he was, he told the Daily Mail: “Not yet. When I’m more frail or in bed for days we might be.”

“If you have 20 days left, why spend them in mourning and turmoil? Why not have only 15 days of pure, pure ignorance and five days of knowing the facts?”

“I’m not looking forward to chatting with Rex. We’re still thinking about it. I’ve learned it’s best not to do anything if you’re unsure.”

The couple decide not to get too mad about buying the kids toys and instead want to make memories with them – with trips to Legoland and Peppa Pig World.

Johnny fears that his children, particularly the twins, will not remember him when he is gone.

Since his diagnosis, cancer has spread to his body and liver and he says, “I’ve been told I have months to live. We’re hurtling towards where we don’t want to be.”

“I got a huge dose of reality. I’m not going to get over this. People say, ‘Don’t worry. You will.’ Well, I probably won’t, my friend.”

The star has been busy working hard to ensure that Jess and the kids are taken care of when he is gone and that there is no mortgage.

Johnny found out he had cancer – which had spread to his brain – a week after filming A Place in the Sun in Italy in August 2020.

One of the oldest presenters on the show, he joined alongside Jasmine Harman in 2004 and was filming as recently as April of this year.
