Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Mark Meadows, revealed in her testimony before the Jan. 6 House Committee how the former chief of staff routinely burns documents in his office.
A new set of transcripts released Tuesday by the Capitol Riot Investigation Committee revealed Ms. Hutchinson’s testimony from May in which she told the committee that she saw Mr. Meadows burn documents in his office stove about a dozen times — about once or twice a week. – Between December 2020 and mid-January 2021.
She said that the staff of the General Department were told to light the heater in the morning and additional records were kept beside it and in his wardrobe.
“So he would put more logs on the stove all day long to keep it burning all day. And I remember about a dozen times where he would take—I don’t know the official name of what is called to cover the stove—but remove that and then throw a few more logs with him when Put more logs on the fireplace, she said.
Her testimony was first reported in May by Politico who spoke to sources familiar with the committee’s proceedings.
Transcripts revealed that Meadows burned the documents at least twice after meetings with Republican Representative Scott Perry.
The Pennsylvania Republican has been linked to efforts to use the Justice Department to overturn the 2020 election.
Ms. Hutchinson said she remembered an account of being in Meadows’ office when he threw documents into the fireplace after a meeting.
According to the transcripts, Ms Hutchinson said she did not know what the documents were, and whether they were originals or required by law to keep them.
It was previously reported that Ms. Hutchinson, who served as a special assistant in the Trump administration, told the select committee during this deposition that “there were concerns that were brought forward” to her former boss prior to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
But she wasn’t sure what to do with that information.
