The third day of cricket in the Sydney Test was washed out by rain

SYDNEY, Jan 6 (Reuters) – Heavy rain washed out the third day of the already weather-beaten third and final Test between Australia and South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

Play was officially called off shortly after the tea break, when rain was forecast to continue for the rest of the day.

The outlook for the weekend is more promising and Australia should continue their first innings 475-4 on Saturday with Usman Khawaja’s 195 not out to close out his maiden Test double century.

Australia have wrapped up the series after wins in Brisbane and Melbourne but need a win in the third Test to be assured of a place in this year’s World Cup finals.

The hosts released batsman Marcus Harris and fast bowler Lance Morris for their Big Bash League squad on Friday and called in Peter Handscomb as a substitute for the rest of the Test in Sydney.
