Center heard from all players regarding allegations against WFI: Anurag Thakur

The Wrestling Federation of India and India’s top wrestlers are in a confrontational situation after the latter made allegations including sexual harassment against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Sunday that the Center had heard all the allegations and an impartial investigation would begin to clear things up.

“A tournament has been stopped immediately, an additional secretary has been sacked and an oversight committee will begin an impartial investigation to clear things up,” Thakur said.

India’s sports ministry on Saturday suspended WFI deputy secretary Vinod Tomar. The ministry took action after WFI wrote to the Ministry of Sports and dismissed allegations against its chairman Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

India’s Ministry of Sports has also ordered WFI to suspend all activities until the Oversight Committee is officially appointed and takes over the day-to-day operations of WFI. This includes the suspension of ongoing ranking competitions and the refund of entry fees levied on participants. This announcement follows a January 20 decision by the government to appoint an oversight committee that will take over the day-to-day operations of the WFI.

Earlier, Anurag Thakur also said that the WFI Chairman will step down until the committee exists. The committee will submit its report within four weeks. Meanwhile, protesting wrestlers ended their protest after receiving promises from the government that their complaints would be addressed, the first action being the resignation of Indian Wrestling Federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who was making the object of criticism.
