Duke Falls Hot Shooting for the Hokies, 78-75

BLACKSBURG, Va. Duke freshman Kyle Filipowski recorded its fourth straight double-double, but Duke fell to Virginia Tech Monday night, 78-75. Filipowski scored a career-high 29 points while grabbing 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (14-6, 5-4). Tyrese Proctor andDariq Whitehead also finished in double figures with 10 points. Whitehead scored all 10 of his points in the first half before leaving the game late in the first half with a leg injury.

Filipowski posted a new career-high 9-of-17 shooting from the field (.529), including a new career-high four shots from beyond the arc. The Westtown, NY native now has 10 double-doubles on the year and is averaging 23.0 points and 13.3 rebounds over his last four games. The freshman has scored 10 or more points in 18 of Duke’s 20 games this season, including all of Duke’s last six contests.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN

• Duke got off to a quick start, scoring seven points in the first 1:20 of the game. Kyle Filipowski scored four of the Blue Devils’ first seven on a putback and a breakaway.
• The Hokies used a hot performance from behind the arc, going 5-7 (.714), to grab a 25-19 lead with 11:30 left in the first half.
• Dariq Whitehead reached double figures for the sixth time in the last eight games with his third 3-pointer of the first half and cut the Blue Devils’ deficit to eight, 38-30, in the final media timeout of the opening frame.
• The Blue Devils left the locker room after halftime on a 13-5 run to tie the score at 51 with each 3-pointer. Mark Mitchell less than four minutes in the second half.
• Duty Tyrese Proctor capped off a quick 7-0 spurt by the Blue Devils for a five-point Duke lead, 58-53, with just under 14 minutes left in the game.
• An 8-0 run by Virginia Tech helped the home team regain the lead before the two teams went back and forth for most of the second half. The Blue Devils trailed by just five points, 72-67, in the final media timeout.
• Filipowski hit one of two free throws with 90 seconds left to finish with 29 points, a new career high.
• Proctor drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 75, forcing a Hokies timeout with 35.3 seconds left. Virginia Tech grabbed the lead with a midcourt jumper and then hit one of two free throws to complete the night’s scoring.

NOTES

• Duke held a 30-27 rebound advantage, including a 9-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. It’s the 16th time in 20 games this season that Duke has beaten its opponent.
• Duke is now 13-3 this season when out-rebounding the opponent and 11-3 with the offensive rebound advantage.
• Duke is averaging 15.0 assists over its last 11 games (10 games in double figures)
• Duke had 17 assists on 29 goals and has totaled 36 assists in the last two games.
• Duke has now made at least one 3-point field goal in 1,173 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the nation.
