Men’s Tennis Blanks Union – College of New Jersey Athletics

EWING, NJ The TCNJ men’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 non-conference sweep of visiting Union College on Saturday at the Rec Center.

It was a relatively straightforward display of dominance for the Lions (2-0), who dropped just seven games on singles courts 1, 3, 4 and 6.

Matthew Michibata had a pair of convincing victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to bring her career total to 99. She will get her first crack at joining the 100-win club when Franklin & Marshall visit next Saturday.

Michibata and Maitland-Carter started the afternoon with an 8-3 victory in the top doubles field, closely followed. Earth eagle and Nick Matkiwsky with an 8-2 win at number 2.

In one of the only close races of the day Jacob Quijano and Albert Thomas won 8-6 over Austin Gregory and Bailey McAtee at No. 3.

Maitland-Carter’s 6-0, 6-0 double bagel at No. 3 singles was quickly followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michibata at No. 1, which officially marked the team’s victory.

However, the Lions hunted for a sweep and found just that. Thomas won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1, but Adrian Tsui conceded the first set at No. 2. He immediately pulled off a comeback, taking the second frame, 6-3, and holding off Ben Jacobs, 10-6, in a super tiebreaker.

Derek Jordan won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Brett Schuster sent his opponent to No. 6 with a slash 6-0, 6-2.

The Lions will face F&M (Saturday) and RIT (Sunday) next weekend in Ewing.
