Norwich: Councilor hits out at Hellesdon table tennis jobs

A group of thugs were seen gathered around a table in The Yard at Hellesdon Recreation Ground at around 5pm on Tuesday 11 April.

A member of the group then reportedly climbed onto the table and pushed on it until it collapsed and broke.

Hellesdon Parish Council leader Shelagh Gurney said she was disappointed at the destruction of the table she and other councilors had helped set up in an effort to stop anti-social behavior in the park.

He said: “As chairman I was very shocked and distressed to see the table tennis court damaged.

“It is pointless and unnecessary, their actions are selfish and have taken the opportunity away from other young people who want to use it.

“I understand the police are investigating and I hope they find those responsible and take the necessary action.”

Police are treating the incident as criminal damage and are now looking for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw it happen.

Following the incident, Hellesdon Parish Council has announced that the areas surrounding the table will be closed for the “foreseeable future”.

The Yard was established in 2021 to provide older children with a place to play after reports of teenagers hijacking a community play area and threatening younger children.

It came after several incidents of vandalism and anti-social behavior at the recreation area, with the youth center burning down and young children being cursed.
