Washington, DC (10.5.2023) Added to today’s starting line-up, midfielder Chloe Ricketts made his first career NWSL start and defenseman Camryn Biegalski made his first start in the 2023 season (any competition).
The Pride wasted no time in attacking pressure as Caitlin Cosme fired the ball just wide of the goal. Just six minutes later, in the 10th minute, Tori Hansen scored the first goal of the game to put Orlando up 1-0. It was only the second goal conceded this season at Audi Field. Hansens’ goal came from a corner that slipped past the penalty area and the goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury.
The spirit answered forward The Kuhlmann Society logging in two shots in quick succession one header from deep that went just over the goal and another shot from a corner that went wide of the post to the left. Amber Brooks added attacking pressure in the 24th by sliding in at the back post and connecting with the midfielder’s cross Marissa Sheva which was sent over the goal.
However, at 33 the pot was broken and the Spirits offense was rewarded in quick succession. Ahead Lena Silano sent a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal from outside the penalty area. This slipped past Orlandos Kaylie Collins. The goal was the first of her young NWSL career, and she accomplished it in just her second career NWSL start (in all competitions).
Five minutes later, the Spirit struck again to take a 2-1 lead. Defender Sam Stab, who typically navigated the Spirits’ sets, fired a direct free kick from just outside the right part of the box. Staab’s goal tonight was her first UKG NWSL Challenge Cup goal since the first Challenge Cup, where she scored a header to equalize against Portland Thorns FC. Staab also continued his scoring streak in every season he has played. In addition, his goal was only the sixth direct free kick in Challenge Cup history. The Spirit has two of them (Ashley Sanchez’s last April at Gotham FC).
The third goal in nine minutes came in the same way as the two before Marissa Sheva scored her first career NWSL goal with another bomb from outside the box. Shevas’ goal was assisted by Ricketts, who recorded his first career assist. Ricketts becomes the youngest player ever to provide an assist in the Challenge Cup, usurping his teammate Trinity Rodman who previously held the record.
Silano almost added to the fun minutes after Sheva from Kuhlmann’s pass, but his shot went just wide. In the first half, the Spirit outscored the Pride 10-4, recorded 17 more last-third possessions and won the ball 58.7% to 41.3%.
Both teams registered substitutions at the beginning of the second half, especially the midfielder Riley Tanner who replaced Rickett. That trade earned Tanner her first career NWSL appearance.
Shortly after, the Pride kept things interesting, cutting the lead to 3-2. Pride forward Ally Watt broke free from a breakaway four minutes into the half and sent a shot past Kingsbury.
Very little followed the next action until Ashley Hatch and For Jaurena received yellow cards in the 81st and 85th shifts. It lasted until the fourth minute of the second half break Ashley Sanchez took advantage of an empty Pride net and sent a bomb from the well outside the box. All four of the Spirit’s goals came from outside the box, and all four of the goals represented the Spirits’ four total shots.
Despite early pressure from the Pride, the Spirit dominated this game almost from whistle to whistle. The side outperformed the Pride in several key stats: shots (+9), shots inside the box (+5), touches in the opposition box (+11), final third passes (+26) and crosses (+13). Defender Maddie Elwell performed remarkably well, leading the team in both final third tackles (13) and steals (2).
The Spirit next travel to the West Coast to face Angel City FC at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California at 10pm EDT.
