PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The former Flyer and broadcaster Keith Jones is now the team’s president from hockey activities. After nine years as a player and 17 years in the TV department, Jones is moving upstairs to manage the entire series.
Jones appeared on the latest episode of the Gallen of Question Podcast to talk about the work ahead and how to fix the issues.
“Well, number one, we’ve got to get younger. We’ve got to get more talent,” Jones said. “We need to make sure we draft very well and develop some of the young talent we have in our system including Cutter Gauthier, who looks like a very important player for us going forward.”
As a result of the Flyers’ recent struggles, some fans may feel apathetic toward the franchise.
The The Flyers will be released for the 31-38-13 season where they missed the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.
Philadelphia has not made the postseason since the 2019-20 season, when they lost second round in seven rounds to the New York Islanders in the second round.
What does Jones say to Flyers fans who have recently lost faith in the organization?
“When fans are apathetic toward an organization, they stop listening and paying attention,” Jones said. “We want to give them a reason to come back. We also hear from those who are dissatisfied. We hear from those who are still interested but are angry.”
“We want you. We want your opinion,” Jones added. “We’re listening and we want to do it right. We’re not there right now, we understand that. But there’s no question it’s a big challenge trying to start climbing the sports landscape here in Philadelphia.”
Jones thinks can handle the Flyers rebuildbut can he handle Gallen’s questions?
Favorite athlete outside of hockey?
Jones: “I’m going to say Bryce Harper.”
What is the worst knock he has received during his playing days?
Jones: “Richard Pilon. He hit me left, I thought he was right. My helmet flew across the ice. I don’t remember much after that.”
Who is the most ridiculous Flyers teammate he’s ever had?
Jones: “I thought Alexandre Daigle was ridiculous. He was ridiculously funny and under the radar. A real character, but he had a lot of pizzazz.”
What is the best thing about Philadelphia?
Jones: “The people. There’s no doubt about it. They’re great.”
