Why settle for any old English cottage when you can have an oversized historic mansion?

A complete Jacobean mansion known as Stanton Court has come on the market, with the Grade II listed property set in 12 acres of idyllic Cotswolds. Listed for around $18m (£14m), the Elizabethan-style residence dates back some 400 years. It is said to have been built for the Izod family in the 17th century, then commissioned by English architect Sir Phillip Sydney Scott in 1913. He is not only responsible for renovating the house, but also renovated much of the surrounding village, which he bought a few years before in 1906.

The current owners of Stanton Court have made a number of their own upgrades, including upgrading seven reception rooms and 10 suites. The previous owners also used acclaimed garden designer Rupert Golby to redesign the grounds.

“Stanton Court has to be one of the most beautiful houses on the edge of one of the finest villages in the Cotswolds,” says Ed Sugden, head of land at Savills.

Inside, the pad is filled with historic features such as carved fireplaces, intricate moldings, elaborate plasterwork and rich wood floors. The grandiose residence offers plenty of space for entertaining. The hall, which was added to the house in 1774, offers a wonderful view of the charming garden below, which can be admired after cocktail hour. The home also includes a library, billiards room, gym and screening room.

In addition to the main digs, the spread includes four cottages, an indoor pool and a large pond. You will also find a paddock, an orchard and a cricket pitch. According to the listing, the latter is currently used by local clubs, with the owners’ permission, of course.

“Stanton Court is a quintessential Cotswold village house that benefits from being part of the village of Stanton, but completely isolated from it – a rarity these days,” adds Knight Frank’s Rupert Sweeting, who is listing the property.
