Former President Donald Trump is coming to Erie Saturday for a campaign rally, and the city is hoping he’ll stick around long enough to pay off the nearly $40,000 it says he owes from the last time he held an event there.

In fact, Erie Mayor Joe Schember told GoErie.com that since the city has yet to receive the $35,129 it says it owes Trump from his 2018 rally, it will try to pay the former president this time for Saturday’s 6 pm rally at the Erie Insurance Arena.

I think we have to try, and I feel like my team feels the same way, Schember said. We will see if we can get some payment from them early this time. It’s important to do this because it’s talking about taxpayer money being used to help make his visit safer.

The site reported that almost all of the fees were related to overtime pay for city workers assigned to cover the event, including police officers.

GoErie.com reports that the parking lot at the arena will open at 8 am and the doors will open at 1 pm, so it will be a long day for city employees.

The site reported that the city made a formal request for reimbursement following the 2018 rally but received nothing in return from the Trump campaign.

Trump was able to bring in millions of dollars for his campaign, Schember said. He should easily be able to pay these costs to the cities.
