Wasabi, a fuzzy Pekingese with a black and brown face and soulful eyes, was New York’s best dog on Monday, posing at the Empire State Building the day after winning the Best in Show category at the Westminster Kennel Club.
Gail Miller Bisher, communications director at the Westminster Kennel Club, said Wasab had an impressive pedigree. “Wasab’s grandfather really won the show best in 2012, Malachy was his name. And Wasab’s father won the toy group in 2015. So here are the top best dogs.”
Bisher said Wasabi won because of his mobile walk and confidence.
“Other dogs, it’s just a few steps, but he has to take a lot more. And he took them with pride and attitude,” he said.
Holding Wasabi on the Empire State observation deck, flying in his fur coat, breeder-owner-handler David Fitzpatrick described how exciting it was to win.
“I’m only suppressed when I talk about it,” he said. “I never thought he would win … The Beijingers are relaxed and have a very royal attitude. But when he’s in the ring, he knows how to turn it on.”
Wasabi also posed for the pictures next to the trophy cup and the large purple and yellow ribbon.
This year was the first time the show had not been held in Manhattan.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers moved the exhibit from their regular Madison Square Garden mines to the 19th-century Lyndhurst mansion along the Hudson River in Tarrytown, and delayed it from February to keep it outdoors.
Held every year since 1877, the exhibition is one of the oldest and most popular sporting events in the United States. Dogs from over 200 different purebred breeds can compete and the judges will decide which competitors best meet the requirements of their breed.
Wasabi won over 2,500 other dogs to win Best in Show.
