BENGALURU: In a new study, researchers at IISc and Tel Aviv University in Israel have found that inviting a group reduces the risk of cathydids (shrub crickets) against bats that are their predators.
According to researchers, male crickets from Harish Prakash and Rohini Balakrishna of the IISc Center for Ecosciences (CES) and partners Stefan Greif and Yossi Yovel of Tel Aviv University are known to form groups and report together to attract women.
… Calling a group attracts more women and thus opens up mating opportunities. But these signaling men can also attract eavesdroppers, such as bats, the IISc statement said.
And in a selection experiment, the researchers found that bats attracted more than three speakers playing katydid speech than one speaker. Does this mean that being invited to a group can be risky?
Yeah. But that’s just one part of the story, they say. The team, which also tested how long it takes bats to capture a calling cathidide alone compared to a group of simultaneously playing cathedids, found that bats took significantly longer to capture a cathid call to the group.
This delay in interception time allows the catheter to stop calling and avoid eating. Therefore, while cathedrals inviting the group may attract bats, the ineffectiveness of bats in capturing cathydids in groups may benefit the prey, according to researchers.
As to why bats take more time to summon prey in a group, the team said one possible reason was the confusion: a predator finds it harder to target and capture an individual when it is among many.
At the same time, the IISc noted that previous studies have looked at this only with visual predators such as monkeys, geckos, and fish, but this study provides the first evidence of a hearing loss effect in eavesdropping on eavesdroppers such as bats.
In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the researchers said: … in catch capture missions, the average rest time and number of airline tickets taken by bats before catacid abduction were significantly higher when calling prey than when calling alone, indicating a lower risk of prey when playing together.
Another general anti-predation strategy, summoning from within the vegetation, increased the time required for bats to capture solitary calling cathedids, but did not prolong the summoning of predators from combinations.
The longer elapsed time of summoning a predator, compared to a solitary summoned prey, provides an escape option, thus providing a prey that provides an acoustic signal with advantages against predators. For bats, better visibility of predator assemblies is offset by lower feeding efficiency, and this trade-off may shape predators ’feeding strategies in natural environments, the researchers argued.
