June 21 (Reuters) – Focus on artistic swimming – formerly known as synchronized swimming – at the Tokyo Olympics 2020:
ABSOLUTE CRITERIA
* One of only two women-only events at the Olympics in addition to rhythmic gymnastics
* There are two competitions: a duet with two athletes, and a team of eight
* Swimmers compete in both events in a “free” and “technical routine.” The scores are between 0-100 and the combined scores of both will determine the winner.
How many medals?
Two, one on the team and one in the duet.
WHAT HAPPENED IN RIO?
In 2016, Russia continued to dominate the sport, where it has won all Olympic gold medals since Sydney since 2000 and won its fifth consecutive gold medal in a team competition around mermaids and gypsies.
Svetlana Romashima and Natalia Ischchenko took second consecutive gold in the duet. Ischchenko has since retired, and Romashima is now in a partnership with Svetlana Kolesnichenko, a member of the Rio Gold Medal.
China took silver in both the team and the duet, while Japan demanded bronze.
WHAT CAN WE TAKE IN TOKYO?
The Russians are hitting when they have taken nine out of ten golds at the 2019 World Cup, while China and Japan are high.
The second team to follow is Ukraine, which took the only gold that Russia did not win in 2019 and hoped for its first Olympic medal with six World Championship prizes.
Artistic swimming is popular in Japan, so the Japanese team is looking for momentum in their home.
WHAT’S NEW?
More and more teams are changing their official name to artistic swimming after the water sports governing body FINA has decided to renew the brand and increase its popularity.
When will it happen?
2.-7.8.
Where does it happen?
In Tokyo Water Park, a new building designed by Paul Noritaka Tange, whose father Kenzo designed the Yoyogi Gym, which was used as a water park at the 1964 Tokyo Games.
HOW DID WE FIND OUT HERE?
Artistic swimming was developed from decorative swimming and water ballets and originally emphasized choreography with a focus on graceful movements. Around 2000, more jumps and lifts began to be included.
A demonstration event at several Olympics, artistic swimming became the official sport at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, with first solo and duet performances. The team event was presented in Atlanta in 1996, and the duet performance was restored in Sydney in 2000.
Very imaginative
While the sport emphasizes making routines look easy, underwater collisions are common in practice. Estimates of women who experience concussions at some point in their careers range from 50 percent to as high as 100 percent.
