Man faces 15 years in prison for allegedly installing 46 bitcoin and crypto miners in government building

A man could end up behind bars for 15 years after being caught mining Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies in central Riverhead County, New York.

The Associated Press reports that Christopher Naples, an IT operations supervisor in the county clerk’s office, faces charges of public corruption, robbery and computer intrusion for secretly installing 46 crypto miners in the building of the government.

The 42-year-old, a county employee for more than two decades, is said to have placed the devices in six rooms, hiding them in places such as unused electrical wall panels and under floors. Authorities say some of the machines had been in place since February.

Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said the Naples program cost public funds at least $ 6,000 in utility bills.

Mining for cryptocurrency requires a huge amount of resources, and miners must figure out how to cover all of those electricity and cooling costs. [Naples] found a way to do it; unfortunately, it was on the backs of taxpayers.

Sini also says that Naples had placed so many minors inside the building that several employees complained about the slow internet speed, and when the minors were removed from a room the temperature dropped by more than 20 degrees.
