It’s easy to impact Bitcoin

Often, those with the greatest impact go unnoticed. At Bitcoin Magazine, we have a great copy editing network, which includes the very talented Keith Mukai. Mukai contributes to Bitcoin in so many ways, and we’re very lucky to have him here at the magazine. In this episode, we discussed his background which led him to Bitcoin, including the skills that enabled him to contribute to space. We also talked about how Bitcoin has changed his life, his favorite article he edited here in the magazine, and what he personally looks forward to in the industry. What’s your Bitcoin rabbit hole story?

Sadly, I didn’t have that nerd friend who could have told me about Bitcoin at the start. It just took me the usual 3+ touches over the course of a few years to finally take a closer look and take the plunge in June 2017.

But I learned a valuable lesson. Before 2017, every time I ran into Bitcoin, I was like, “Dude, that looks cool! I have to check ! But I had no idea what to do with it if I had any. It seemed difficult to justify the time and effort for something that, at the time, was just a cheesy curiosity. And then I would forget it. Lord, how many regrets I have!

So now when I come across a new technology or even just a new skill, I dive in. I’m not thinking about how that will be useful or if it will advance my career or have a future return on investment. If I’m interested, I’m there. Period. Every bit of expertise, knowledge and skill that I can acquire will one day pay off in ways that I could not anticipate today. Circuits, woodworking, astrophotography, endless rabbit holes in Bitcoin itself … I’m here for it all. All of these unique combinations of expertise give me a unique perspective. This is my return on investment. I will see solutions that others cannot.

How has Bitcoin changed your life?

I feel like I’m finally making a difference in the world!

At the end of 2019, I was following a brand new raw project called Specter Desktop. I loved what Stepan Snigirev was doing with it, but his goal was to support air-gap hardware wallets that never plug into a computer. I wanted to use Specter but I only had USB wallets. I asked him if he would be open to adding support for USB wallets. He gave his blessing so I got to work. Fast forward to today: Bitcoin Beach has helped propel Bitcoin onto the global stage. And their custom community wallet uses Specter to manage their cold storage. If they use USB hardware wallets, they use my code!

And then, after Jack Mallers’ incredible announcement on El Salvador at the Bitcoin 2021 conference, I was so inspired that I really wanted to add Spanish language support to Specter. And the way the code works, if you add support for one language, you can basically add all the other languages. So I recruited volunteer translators and we ended up translating Specter entirely into 11 languages, and many more to come!

And more recently, my previous DIY with a Raspberry Pi paid off now that I found out about SeedSigner, which is this amazing open source, super cheap hardware wallet. I’m having a great time adding some cool new features to this project, all in the hope that it will eventually find its way to places like El Salvador where people can’t afford a 100% hardware wallet. $ 300. Due to SeedSigner’s unique stateless approach, an entire family – or even an entire city – could share a single $ 50 SeedSigner in a reasonably safe manner.

My code therefore has the potential to help spread the autonomy of Bitcoin to more and more people around the world. Unbelievable.

As editor-in-chief of the magazine, you have worked on several of our articles. What were your favorite articles to edit and why? (could be specific parts, could be certain kinds of parts, what have you got)

Definitely Arman le Parman’s “DIY Bitcoin Private Key Project”! This is a fun step-by-step guide to generate your own private key completely offline without using a computer at all. It lays out the steps so clearly and it really helps you understand how the process goes. What would otherwise be mysterious Bitcoin magic just becomes something simple and mechanical that isn’t even that hard to figure out.

Just an amazing piece of accessible, high quality education.

What are you looking forward to the most in the Bitcoin space?

I am reorganizing my professional life to fully commit to working in the Bitcoin ecosystem. There is a ton of work to be done as Bitcoin sees more and more adoption around the world. I’m not savvy enough to be able to predict where we’re going or what the world will be like, but I’m dying to build like crazy to provide the tools and services that become necessary along the way.

Price forecast for the end of 2021, and the end of 2030?

Phew. It is early September and we just fell on $ 50,000 thanks to the launch of Bitcoin in El Salvador. In three and a half months? $ 85,000.

The end of 2030 includes two other halves. Much more global adoption. Undoubtedly more printing of fiat money. I would say $ 675,000 after dropping from a mania peak in 2029, just under $ 900,000.
