Bitcoin rallied nearly $ 44,000 on Monday morning after a hectic week, which ended with the People’s Bank of China issuing a statement announcing that it had banned crypto transactions.
Bitcoin fell more than 10% last Monday in a massive sell-off in the market, largely driven by concerns about contagion from over-leveraged Chinese developer Evergrande. After briefly trading just above $ 40,000 last week, the crypto started trading above $ 43,000 until the announcement of PBoCs.
The ether also seems to have recovered. After falling below $ 3,000 last week, the crypto was trading above $ 3,100 on Monday.
The recovery has been swift given that the PBoC has functionally declared crypto illegal, although this is not surprising given the gradual crackdown on crypto in China over the summer.
Several Chinese provinces began to hunt crypto miners from May, briefly halving the global hashrate as miners moved, many to Texas.
Grayscale, DeFi and U.S. crypto exchanges could benefit from the Chinese crypto crackdown as trade volume moves to the United States, according to a report released on Friday by the digital asset management company.
Additionally, the U.S. crypto industry could see more jobs for U.S. workers as crypto operations move offshore.
Meanwhile, crypto exchanges with large Chinese user bases are scrambling to abandon their Chinese customers.
Huobi, a popular offshore exchange, announced that it had stopped new user registrations of clients with Chinese phone numbers and said it would gradually deactivate existing accounts linked to users in mainland China. The Huobis token fell more than 18% on Friday.
Crypto exchange Binance has announced that it will also suspend new user registration for residents of mainland China.
Alibaba, a huge Chinese e-commerce platform, has announced that it will ban the sale of crypto miners, as well as the use of crypto tokens. Its Blockchain Miner and Blockchain Miner Accessories categories will be closed on October 8.
