The crypto crossover in sports continues to evolve every week. Dominating the headlines this week, the NFL has finally dipped its toes in the NFT sand. The historic sports league will work with the creators of the Flow Dapper Labs blockchain for a ‘Top Shot’ market for football fans.
Let’s dive into these stories and more into the latest sports and crypto news from the past seven days.
The Sports Slice Dapper Labs Announces New Sports Agreement
Dapper expands the sports portfolio with new partnerships with the major leagues. After locking down La Liga in recent months, blockchain developer Flow is targeting American football fans.
Dapper has announced his latest partnership with the NFL which will see an NFT market, similar to the one seen with Top Shot, run wild before the end of the football season. Meanwhile, the LaLiga market is slated for June 2022.
FTX, and the ‘F’ stands for football
FTX has been practically a weekly appearance in the Sports Slice lately, signing a number of different deals in recent weeks. Last week, the exchange signed a long-term partnership agreement with running back Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers. FTX made waves earlier this year by signing NFL quarterback Tom Brady and most recently NBA star Steph Curry.
The official press release cites Jones’ desire to invest in “legendary entrepreneurs,” with this latest deal helping him do just that.
Sports betting on polygon?
Last week, Polygon launched a million dollar cash-mining program aimed at creating liquidity on Augur Turbo, a decentralized prediction platform. Predictions on Augur Turbo aren’t limited to sports either, and include politics, current events, and more.
Could Polygon power the next wave of crypto sports betting platforms?

Patch Spencer Dinwiddie and the Wizards
An interesting story that gained some traction this weekend was with NBA player Spencer Dinwiddie and his crypto firm, Calaxy. Dinwiddie said the league refused, saying they don’t let players do business with teams or owners, according to a Washington Post report.
Our team first covered Dinwiddie’s crypto engagement earlier this year, when the hooper partnered with the CeFi Celsius app and Calaxy’s initial debut. The Post’s note comes just a week after the Philadelphia 76ers announced a deal with Crypto.com.
Polygon (MATIC) dipped its toes in the water with a sporting engagement with a collaborative cash fundraising initiative for Augur Turbo. Sportsbook engagement with crypto companies at a high level has been limited so far, mainly highlighting DraftKings’ partnership with Autograph.io. | Source: MATIC-USD on TradingView.com Boca Juniors NFT
The Boca Juniors are arguably Argentina’s biggest football club. In a country where there is no shortage of football talent, the Boca Juniors club has long held a notable position in the market. Last week, reports emerged – led by Bloomberg – that the club was in talks with a number of different crypto companies, including Socios.com, regarding the issuance of the club’s own token.
Socios.com and Sorare are the main team token platforms in the market, so it will be interesting to see how things turn out for the Boca Juniors.
Big Face Coffee: this sports star brought crypto to coffee
NBA player Jimmy Butler began launching his new line of coffee, “Big Face Coffee,” last week. Athlete has partnered with Shopify and will be releasing NFTs and branded products under a revenue sharing deal with Shopify.
In July, Shopify announced its first step towards integrating NFTs for merchants. The test was a Chicago Bulls NFT project that went exceptionally well. It will definitely be interesting to see more of NFT coming to Shopify.
An NFT the size of a Shaq?
Yes, you’re right, Shaquille O’Neal – the Big Diesel, Shaq himself – is the latest NBA star to come out of the bottom of the NFTs. Shaq’s Twitter profile features an NFT of creatures and bio notes “Creature # 9018”.
Check out Shaq’s full OpenSea account, which includes over 60 NFTs, including a mutant monkey.
Socios.com is one step ahead
Socios.com wants to be the undisputed answer for sports teams looking to engage with Fan Tokens. Add another NBA team to the roster last week, as the San Antonio Spurs released the partnership press release and the Charlotte Hornets have, too, all in recent days. A day later, the Milwaukee Bucks joined them. It’s a busy time for Socios.com.
