The Bitcoin White Paper was released 13 years ago today, October 31, 2008.
The email containing the whitepaper was sent just after 2 p.m. ET to a mailing list for cryptographers. According to a copy of the email on file with the Nakamato Institute, pseudonymous Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto wrote at the time: “I have been working on a new fully peer-to-peer electronic payment system, without trusted third parties. . “
“The main properties: Double spending is avoided through a peer-to-peer network. No mint or other trusted parties. Participants can be anonymous. New parts are made from proof of work Hashcash-style proof of work for the next generation of coins also feeds into the network to avoid double spending, ”Nakamoto continued.
Nakamoto’s article received its first response on November 2 from James A. Donald, who replied, “We really, really need such a system, but from the way I understand your proposal, it doesn’t seem adapt to the size required. “
Bitcoin was then officially launched on January 3, 2009, when the first block of transactions – known as the genesis block – was mined.
