Wild pay for data scientists and developers at top crypto companies

The main players in the crypto world are hiring. Yes, they hire former traders and equity derivative structurers, but crypto tokens and blockchains are code-based products, and the number one requirement for crypto companies is tech staff.

At a crypto conference in Lisbon last month, the shortage of crypto developers was the main topic of conversation according to Chris Aruliah, product manager at BCB Group, a crypto-banking, payments and commerce company. The BCB alone is planning to “double or triple” the size of its tech team over the next year, Aruliah said, but it won’t be easy. – Everyone is chasing the same talent.

As hiring increases, the compensation of developers and data scientists in the crypto industry increases. The chart below shows the certified salaries offered by major crypto companies to people hired on H1B visas in the United States in 2021.

Coinbase in particular recruits and offers top-of-the-market compensation. The crypto exchange, which has a reputation for putting its employees to work long hours, attempted to pay a senior software engineer $ 1.7 million on an H1B visa earlier this year, but the request was denied. Senior CTOs at Coinbase in San Francisco, however, are regularly paid over $ 270,000, and CTOs regularly receive $ 180,000 to $ 230,000, and simple software engineers earn $ 130,000. Bonuses and actions will be paid on top of that.

Rob Lycett, a crypto tech headhunter, said the demand for “all developers” on “all digital assets” has increased. “It’s every tech stack, every discipline,” he added.

Coinbase alone currently has over 130 open engineering positions around the world. Its senior software engineers hired this year are from Google, Bridgewater and Uber.
