The Solana Foundation warns of a security incident with Mailchimp

The Solana Foundation, the nonprofit organization of the Solana network, disclosed a security incident on January 14 involving its email service provider Mailchimp.

According to an email sent to users and seen by Cointelegraph, the Foundation was notified by Mailchimp on January 12 that “an unauthorized actor has accessed and exported certain user data from the Solana Foundations Mailchimp instance.”

Among the information accessed and exported during the incident were Telegram usernames and usernames. The Solana Foundation said:

“Based on the information we received from Mailchimp, the relevant information may have included, among other things, email addresses, names and Telegram usernames, in each case only to the extent that users have provided such information. Mailchimp said the incident did not affect passwords or credit card information.”

The number of users affected by the incident is unclear. There was no official announcement from Solana or Mailchimp regarding the incident at the time of publication. Solana did not immediately respond to Cointelegraphs’ request for comment.

A few weeks ago, another crypto company exposed user emails to third-party vendors. As Cointelegraph reported on Dec. 13, hackers gained access to 5,701,649 lines of customer information from crypto exchange Gemini, including partial email addresses and phone numbers.

This isn’t the first time crypto companies have encountered security issues with Mailchimp. In August 2022, email marketing platform Mailchimp suspended its services to crypto content creators and platforms associated with crypto news or related services. Users started experiencing problems logging into accounts, followed by notifications of service interruptions.

At the time, Mailchimp said that across the tech industry, malicious actors are increasingly deploying an array of sophisticated phishing and social engineering tactics targeting crypto-related company data and information.

The company also said that “in response to a recent attack targeting Mailchimps crypto-related users, we have taken proactive steps to temporarily suspend access to accounts for which we have detected suspicious activity while we investigate. further on the incident.
