FTI Consulting has hired Jeremy Sheridan as managing director in its blockchain and digital assets practice. He is based in Washington, DC.
Sheridan brings more than a decade of regulatory affairs experience to FTI, where he will serve as lead investigator and expert witness for litigation related to blockchain, cryptocurrency and other digital assets.
The risky and wild nature of the crypto-asset market was highlighted by the recent collapse of crypto exchange FTX. Prominent economists view crypto-assets as, at best, a way to scam uninformed consumers, and at worst, simply a way to launder money and fund illegal activities. Either way, they have little social utility.
Sheridan is a criminal investigator with extensive experience leading cryptocurrency investigations and law enforcement efforts to combat financial crime. He also has expertise in designing programs for security operations and aligning cryptocurrency business operations with emerging regulations.
He joins FTI from Prime Trust, a provider of financial infrastructure APIs for fintech and digital asset companies, where he spent a year as vice president of regulatory affairs. Prior to that, Sheridan spent more than a decade with the US Secret Service, which has the dual task of protecting political figures and the country’s financial and payment systems.
Sheridan most recently served as Deputy Director in the Office of Investigations, where he led the agency’s global investigative mission to protect and secure the country’s financial infrastructure and payment systems. He also created and implemented the agency’s first dedicated digital asset investigation unit.
Sheridan holds a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Arizona.
“We continue to see a growing demand for expert testifying who understand the technical and operational nuances that arise in blockchain and digital asset litigation,” said Sophie Ross, global head of FTI’s technology division. “This is a rapidly evolving area of specialization, and we are committed to providing our clients with the highest level of expertise and excellence. We welcome Jeremy to complement our growing team, which includes some of the world’s leading blockchain and digital asset experts.
Sheridan added, “Even without substantial industry regulation or legal precedent, there has been tremendous growth and investment in cryptocurrency and digital assets. FTI Technology is well positioned to help its clients mitigate their risks within the industry while helping them develop a strategy for market success despite regulatory uncertainty. I look forward to collaborating with the team and our customers to help shape the future of this exciting space.
FTI Consulting helps clients manage change, mitigate risk and resolve disputes. The Washington, DC-based company has more than 7,600 people in 31 countries.
