Pepe Coin ($PEPE), a recently launched meme-inspired cryptocurrency that has seen its value skyrocket over the past few weeks, seen its price plunge over the past three days, and with its fall, a whale of cryptocurrency lost $500,000.
After debuting on the Binance cryptocurrency exchange on May 5, 2023, PEPE experienced its first boom. It reached an all-time high of $0.00000420, gaining a market cap of over $1 billion.
This surge was largely due to a 67% increase in the price of the token the day after its introduction on Binance. However, the value of the coins dropped to $0.00000259 on May 7, and it currently sits at a value of $0.00000206. The price of cryptocurrencies nevertheless recovered from a low of $0.000001617.
An investor, according to data from the Ethereum blockchain, bought 962.3 billion PEPE for $2.46 million and has lost over $541,000 since the investment, according to Lookonchain.
As CryptoGlobe reported, when it listed the meme-inspired cryptocurrency, loading exchange Binance warned potential investors that PEPE had no inherent utility or value support mechanism. PEPE was charged with potential insider trading, as 7% of the total token supply was allegedly purchased by insiders or team members within minutes of the token generation event.
Despite warnings about the potential ability of contract owners to modify transaction taxes and blacklist functions, the PEPE market has seen a remarkable boom. It is now among the top 100 digital assets after several centralized stock exchange listings.
Earlier, a lucky cryptocurrency investor apparently managed to turn an investment of just 0.125 ETH in PEPE into a staggering $1.14 million in just a few days by buying there at the right time.
The rise of meme-based cryptocurrencies has been a phenomenon in the world of digital finance. In recent years, the meme-inspired cryptocurrency Dogecoin ($DOGE) has seen an explosion in popularity as rivals such as Shiba Inu ($SHIB), Babydoge ($BABYDOGE) Wojak ($WOJAK) and ArbDoge were created and attracted considerable attention.
Memecoins are causing a stir because these cryptocurrencies offer investors an opportunity for significant financial gains, as evidenced by the recent PEPE success story.
However, the rapid rise and potential volatility of meme coins also presents significant risks for investors, especially those who may be new to the world of cryptocurrency, as many end up underwater after purchase.
