The CEO of General Motors (GM), America’s largest automaker, said nothing prevents his company from accepting bitcoin if there is consumer demand. “Certainly we want to make the buying and owning experience as easy as possible,” said GM’s chief executive.

GM Will Accept Bitcoin If There Is Demand, Says CEO

Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors (NYSE: GM), touched on the prospect of America’s largest automaker accepting bitcoin in an interview with CNBC on Wednesday.

Referring to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, saying last week that his electric car maker could start accepting BTC again, Barra was asked if GM would accept cryptocurrency for payments. She replied:

Nothing prevents us from doing it. We will be guided by our clients. We definitely want to make the buying and owning experience as easy as possible. We will follow their example.

When Tesla announced in February that it would accept bitcoin for payments, GM’s CEO said his company was not interested in doing the same. However, during a earnings call in late March, Barra relaxed its stance on BTC and said the company would consider accepting the cryptocurrency “if there is strong consumer demand.” She confirmed on Wednesday that her company’s stance on bitcoin had not changed.

Meanwhile, Musk said this week that Tesla would resume accepting bitcoin “when there is confirmation of reasonable (around 50%) clean energy use by miners with a positive future trend.”
