Bitcoin.org hit by DDoS attack, Bitcoin demanded as ransom

Shortly after becoming embroiled in a UK court decision, the Bitcoin.org website faced yet another battle, this time technically.

According to the site’s pseudonymous operator, Cobra, Bitcoin.org has been hit by an “absolutely massive” distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. CoinDesk was able to access the site without a problem.

Decrypt reported on Monday that the attackers demanded 0.5 bitcoin ($ 17,012 at the time) for the site’s services and operations to be restored to normal.

CoinDesk has attempted to contact Cobra to discuss the issue but has not had a response at press time.

DDoS is a type of cyber attack that targets a site’s host or its infrastructure by flooding the host with request traffic which then overwhelms the system and renders it unusable.

The attack is the latest development on the site, which is designed to educate and instruct others on how to buy and sell crypto.

Last week, the High Court in London granted a default judgment to nChain’s chief scientist Craig Wright because Cobra, unwilling to reveal his true identity, decided not to show up. The court ruled that Bitcoin.org must stop hosting its copy of the Bitcoin whitepaper.
