To eliminate infrastructure talks, Trump increased pressure on the GOP

It’s easy to forget, but nearly halfway through Donald Trump’s presidency, the Republican has briefly raised the prospect of negotiating an infrastructure deal. However, in May 2019, he pulled the plug for a ridiculous reason.

According to Trump’s own version of events, he presented Democrats with an offer: the White House would work on the infrastructure if the Dems agreed to stop investigating several presidential scandals back then. Democratic leaders, naturally, said that wasn’t an option – they added, of course, that Congress could legislate and conduct administration simultaneously – at which time Trump abandoned the process.

Two years later, the Republican appears fixed on a new idea: if he can’t come up with an infrastructure deal, neither should President Biden get one.

Nearly a month ago, the former president pushed a dashed line against bipartisan talks, suggesting that Republicans should both grow and shrink Democratic offers. At the same time, Trump appeared on Fox News and compared the deal with the Democrats to the Nazi pass before World War II.

This week, the former president stepped up the pressure, telling congressman Republicans, “Don’t make the infrastructure deal.” Trump added, “Senate Republicans are completely overwhelmed by Democrats over so -called ‘bipartisan’ infrastructure bills.”

Trump didn’t point out anything specific – he’s not exactly a policy -focused person – or explain what it is about the bipartisan framework that he sees as undesirable. He simply denounced it and instructed GOP senators to do what he asked.

This was followed by the former president with a statement that was more amusing than he intended.

“Who are these RINO Republicans dedicated to giving the Radical Left Democrats a big and good victory in Infrastructure? Republican voters will never forget their name, nor the people of our Country!”

Or put another way, Trump wants to know the names of Republicans whose names will never be forgotten.

But remember the point of the former president’s pitch: if GOP senators reach a two -part agreement on infrastructure, it means “a big and good win” for people who don’t like Trump. Ergo, Republicans must defeat any compromises.

It was not noticed on Capitol Hill. Senate President Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) delivered the remarks late, telling his colleagues, “Here, there are always radical voices on the far right who are uncompromising. But that’s it. is just a recipe for hurdle and gridlock.We have a chance now to really do something good for the American people.Will our Republican colleagues follow the absurd demands of the shameful former president and his allies in media? Or will they get a good, bipartisan deal at the end of the line? “

Schumer concluded, “Republican senators must ignore former President Trump if we are to make progress for the American people. He is rooting for the failure of our entire political system. I and the rest of my fellow Democrats have done so. root for an agreement. “
