New York prosecutors investigating Donald Trump’s vast business empire have evidence that Trump Organization employee Barry Weisselberg evaded taxes by living rent-free in a luxury apartment he owned. owned by the former president, the Daily Beast reported on Sunday.
Barry Weisselberg, the manager of Trump’s Wollman ice rink in Central Park, is the son of Allen Weisselberg, the CFO of the Trump Organization who in July was charged with the company with multiple tax crimes, including scheme to cheat and grand child.
Now prosecutors have evidence delivered to them by Barry Weisselberg’s ex -wife Jennifer that she avoided paying taxes using similar methods, the Daily Beast reported.
According to the report, Jennifer Weisselberg a collaborating witness handed over a decade of tax returns and financial documents showing that her ex-husband did not report all of his income and instead received corporate perks that should be declared taxable income.
Jennifer Weisselberg previously told Insider Jacob Shamsian that the Trump Organization controls employees by giving them houses and tuition instead of raising them.
The news of the prosecutors ’evidence against Barry Weisselberg is significant because it raised hopes Allen Weisselberg could be forced to fall against Trump at the threat of an accusation against his son.
Three people familiar with the investigation told the Daily Beast that it was unclear whether prosecutors planned to use the tactic against Allen Weisselberg, who allegedly refused to flip Trump.
The charges against the elderly Weisselberg stem from an extensive investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the New York Attorney General’s Office into possible financial crimes committed by Trump and executives at his company.
The lawsuit against Allen Weisselberg, dated in June, also provided some insight into what kind of corporate perks Barry Weisselberg could benefit from.
The indictment accused the younger Weisselberg’s residence at a Trump property in Central Park in 2018 as a “scheme to defraud federal, state, and local tax authorities.”
“In 2018, a Weisselberg family member was allowed to occupy another Trump-owned apartment on East 61st Street in Manhattan, with no reported rent,” the indictment said.
“The amount of accommodation provided to [Allen] Weisselberg’s family member generates income to that family member, and defendants are required to report that income and pay taxpayers here to federal, state, and local tax authorities. . Intentionally unable to do so by the defendants. “
Barry Weisselberg is not specifically named but he is the only person who fits the description as a male member of the Weisselberg family who worked for the Trump Organization, the Daily Beast reported.
Other corporate perks that prosecutors may be looking at include discounts on garage fees, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in school fees for Barry Weisselberg’s children paid for using checks that apparently signed by Trump himself, the report said.
The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
