Former President Donald Trump slammed his rhetoric against the law enforcement officer who shot Ashli Babbitt in a statement Wednesday, calling them a murderer and saying, “We know who he is.”
Babbitt died after he was shot by a law enforcement officer as he tried to climb through a broken window to get to the Speaker of the Lobby in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.
“I spoke to the amazing mother and wife of Ashli Babbitt, who was murdered at the hands of someone who shouldn’t have pulled the trigger of his gun,” Trump said. “We know who she is. If it happened on the ‘other side,’ there would be riots all over America, and many more people representing Ashli, who truly love America, than the other side.”
Trump then added: “Radical Left haters are not allowed to get away with it. There must be justice!”
He and Republicans in Congress like Rep. Paul Gosar sought to martyr Babbitt, saying he was unjustly killed and wrongly targeted by law enforcement. GOP lawmakers cited his death to say the insurgency was not as serious as it appeared and he did not make a threat.
In a call to Fox on July 11, Trump called Babbitt a “wonderful woman, girl, who went on peaceful protest,” despite the fact the mess was not peaceful, and suggested without evidence that the shooter to him was “the head of security for a certain high official, a Democrat.”
The Daily Beast reported in mid -July that Trump had privately complained to those around him that he should lower the flag in honor of Babbitt before leaving office.
The Department of Justice decided not to bring criminal charges against the lieutenant who shot Babbitt after it was determined in an investigation that the officer had not violated his civil rights. Babbitt’s family is suing the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, for trying to have it disclose the officer’s identity.
