According to an unpublished book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, former President Donald Trump continues to rage at California’s Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy after McCarthy blamed Trump for the unrest in Jan. 6 at the Capitol.

“This guy called me every day, pretended to be my best friend, and then, he sculpted me,” Trump told friends at a dinner in February, according to a new CNN book preview. “He’s not a good man.”

CNN also reported that on a private phone the night before the inauguration, McCarthy begged Trump to call President -elect Joe Biden, only for him to have Trump stop him.

“You’ve done great things and you want that to be your legacy. Call Joe Biden,” McCarthy told Trump. “Do it for me. You need to call him. Call Joe Biden.” Trump did not call Biden.

In the week following the Capitol attack, McCarthy endorsed a resolution to insult the former president while saying Trump was “responsible for Wednesday’s attack by rioters”

“What we saw last week was not in the American way, nor the ongoing rhetoric that Joe Biden is not the legitimate president. Let’s be clear: Joe Biden will be sworn in as US president in a week because he won the election,” McCarthy said at the time.

In a phone call between the two on the day of the riot, McCarthy pleaded with Trump to remove the mob, only to have Trump reprimand him. “So, Kevin, I guess these people are more angry about the election than you are,” Trump said.

Despite McCarthy’s eventual attempts to repair his relationship with the former President including a trip to Mar-a-Lago to visit Trump in late January Trump reportedly continues to appreciate McCarthy.

“Kevin came down to kiss my ass and wanted my help to win the House again,” Trump said, according to the book.

CNN reported that Trump also remains angry with other Republicans who blame Trump for the mess.

In the months since the uprising, McCarthy has walked back from his initial position. The GOP leader released Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming from her position as House GOP Caucus chair after she continued to emphasize Trump’s role in imaging democracy, and she refused to work with a new select house committee investigating the attacks.

In late August, McCarthy warned telecom companies not to comply with a request released by the select committee, which included notes of “individuals potentially involved in discussions” about the challenge and adjournment in Congress. from the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s election victory in 2020.

“If companies choose to violate federal law, a majority of Republicans will not forget and will stand with Americans that they are fully accountable under the law,” McCarthy said in a statement, while not specifying what law violated by companies.
