When former President Donald Trump was still in the White House, GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy worked in tandem with the conservative administration to enact similar legislation in Congress.

Immediately after the 2020 presidential election, McCarthy vigorously defended Trump’s push to challenge the election results.

“What we need in the presidential race is to make sure every legal vote is counted, every recount is completed, and every legal challenge is heard,” he told the Fox News show “Sunday Morning Features” in November.

However, after the riots at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and Trump’s appearance on the second impeachment trial, McCarthy said next week that the former president was “responsible” for the siege.

“I believe that impeachment of the president in a short period of time would be a mistake … does not mean the president is free from guilt,” he said at the time. “The president is responsible for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters.”

The GOP leader suggested the possibility of a censure resolution, introduced by several Republican members in the House earlier this year.

However, on Jan. 21, McCarthy stepped down and said Trump had not initiated the uprising.

“I can’t believe he inspired it if you listen to what he said at the rally,” he said at the time.

Later that month, the GOP leader – who was working hard to become House Speaker in 2022 – traveled to the Mar -a -Lago club in Florida to meet with the former president.

However, a bit of tension remained, with some in Trumpworld reported to continue to view McCarthy with caution, according to a previous Insider report.

Trump’s aides told The Post that the former president has “learned to be wary” of McCarthy’s diverse interests, even as they work to regain congressional mayorships in 2022 – and on the former’s own potential. president in 2024 on the air.

And the former president has not forgotten McCarthy’s proposed censure resolution associated with the uprising.

“He can’t get past that,” a Trump adviser told The Post. “It’s their main disagreement.”

McCarthy also went on to support some of the Republicans who supported Trump’s impeachment for “inciting the uprising,” which attracted the former president’s anger, according to the report.

However, amidst the controversy talk, Trump pushed against the narrative that he had anything other than a productive alliance with McCarthy.

“I have a good relationship with Kevin,” the former president said in a statement to the Post.
