OK-CADP seeks death row inmate Donald Grant from execution-FOX23 News

TULSA, Okla.-The Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (OK-CADP) is asking the state of Oklahoma not to hang death row inmate Donald Anthony Grant.

OK-CADP is asking for mercy because Grant has brain damage and suffers from schizophrenia.

Grant’s clemency hearing before the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board is scheduled for Tuesday in Oklahoma City.

For now, Grant’s execution is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2022. Grant, 46, has been on death row for two decades for the 2001 murders of Brenda McElyea and Suzette Smith at a LaQuinta Inn in Del City, Okla. .

According to his attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Emma Rolls, Grant suffers from schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. According to Rolls, it took the state of Oklahoma five years to treat Grant to restore his ability to face trial. Grant is currently being treated for his mental illnesses in prison.

The clemency packet filed by Rolls on Grant’s behalf states that Grant suffered from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder after his mother drank alcohol throughout her pregnancy. It also states that his mentally ill and alcoholic father struck Grant on the head with a pole or on the head of his younger brother as a form of punishment when Grant was young.

According to the package, Grant grew up in an apartment where seniors often drank crack-cocaine, and Grant was carrying a slug from a bullet that hit him when he was 12-years-old.

The jury was unaware of Grant’s mental illness during his trial.

Grant will be the second person killed in Oklahoma since the death penalty was resumed following a six -year moratorium. John Marion Grant was killed by lethal injection in Oct. 28, 2021.

The state of Oklahoma has scheduled implementation dates for Bigler Stouffer (Dec. 9, 2021), Wade Lay (Jan. 6, 2022), Gilbert Postelle (Feb. 17, 2022) and James Coddington (Mar. 10, 2022).
