Could Gettr Be the Online Gathering Place for Trump’s GOP?

If you’re not familiar with Gettr, the conservative social-media app, you might be forgiven. Its most notable moment was when the site was hacked on the day of its launch: July 4, 2021. Since then, it has labored anonymously, striving to be an alternative to free speech on Twitter, or the “Twitter killer , ”In the words of Steve Bannon, a frequent Gettr poster.

But the company only had one blockbuster week, reporting seven hundred thousand new users to the site. After Twitter banned both the personal accounts of congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Robert Malone, a prominent doctor in the conservative media, for spreading misinformation on the vaccine, Joe Rogan joined Gettr. “In case the bullshit on Twitter becomes dumber,” Rogan wrote. “I’m here now too.” The masses noticed.

Before Christmas, I met Gettr CEO, Jason Miller, a smart veteran survivor of the same Trump Presidential campaign. As a senior campaign communications advisor in 2016, Miller famously got a co-worker pregnant while her husband was pregnant. A few days before the 2020 election, he claimed that Democrats would “try to steal it back.” On Jan. 6, he reportedly drafted a couple of tweets for Trump, saying “the fake news media” was “trying to blame peaceful and innocent MAGA supporters for the violent actions. ” One of the drafts, which was never posted, said, “Our people must go home and let the criminals suffer the consequences!” (Miller, who was subpoenaed by the committee on Jan. 6, told me, “My lawyers are talking to them.”) I look forward to meeting him at his company’s offices, in Columbus Circle —Where “a few dozen” people work. , Miller said — but the Omicron surge undermines those plans. Instead, we met outside a coffee shop. Earlier, a Gettr spokesperson assured me — inadvertently — that Miller, who had arrived wearing a KN95 mask, had been vaccinated and strengthened.

After a bit of chitchat about DC (Miller commutes to New York a few days a week from his home in Arlington, Virginia), our conversation turned to Trump. In October, 2021, Trump announced that he would launch Truth Social, another alternative to Twitter that is part of his larger — and yet unspecified — media project, Trump Media & Technology Group. Devin Nunes stepped down from Congress in January to serve as CEO of the venture, a move announced shortly after the Securities and Exchange Commission reported it was investigating the project for potential violations. It’s still unclear if Trump’s effort will progress despite slide decks promising that some men will be named “Josh A.” and “Billy B.” will steer the ship, but Miller finds himself in something in a delicate place: his business rival is the most powerful figure in Republican politics, and, basically, the Godzilla of social media. Miller assured me that all was well with Trump — the two talked the other day — and mentioned that the former President would need a working social-media platform if he decides to run in 2024. “If it takes longer to build his platform, I wouldn’t completely exclude his participation in Gettr, ”Miller said.“ And, even if he launched his, I wouldn’t keep in mind that he also creates a Gettr account. ”

Miller told me he made Trump an offer with “a whole lot of zeros,” apparently in the nine-digit range, to join Gettr — but no dice. In early December, Miller hawd the app to congressional staff in DC and got some sign-ups, even though Twitter was hard to remove. (Miller has a staff whose work is focused on signing up “Capitol Hill and GOP influencers.”) When we spoke, Miller had just returned from a trip to Paris, where he courted the most right-wing presidential candidate Éric Zemmour, and he had upcoming trips scheduled to India and Brazil, where, largely due to the use of the app by the sons of Jair Bolsonaro and Bolsonaro, nearly fifteen percent of the Gettr user resides now. His global recruitment gambit is set to include Brazilian country singers, Indian cricket players, and Japanese sumo wrestlers.

Miller won’t speak on the record about the particular pop-culture figures who got Gettr sweet talk, but he did mention that former “Mandalorian” and mixed-martial-arts star Gina Carano has an account. An ad promoting Gettr sign-ups featured a photo of actress Dakota Johnson and her words, “Cancel culture is such a fucking downer,” while one quoted Kim Kardashian to similar effect . Neither Johnson nor Kardashian has an account, but Enes Kanter Freedom — the NBA’s central center and vocal critic of the Chinese government — certainly does.

Gettr, for the most part, lacks recognizable names, though some, such as Tucker Carlson and Tulsi Gabbard, have joined the site over the past few days. Private messages are not yet available. (Miller told me they’re coming this year.) And, while the likes of Mike Pompeo, Sean Hannity, and Dinesh D’Souza have accounts, if you’re not deep into the conservative world of social-media, you may not you know who the many verified Gettr users are. @Jamierodr14, a “Proud Mother, Retired Army Veteran For President Trump!” has over one hundred and eighty -eight thousand followers, but otherwise could not determine what the official Gettr “V” deserves at the top of his account. The same thing happened to verified users like @Clinton614 (“special weapons and tactics operator”) and @KellyCurrie45 (“Married! Fighting for true elections! TRUMP WON! Freedom from Communism! Jesus is Lord 🙏🏻🙌🏻 Let’s go Brandon 💯 ”). All verified users have contacted the Gettr team directly or their verified status on other platforms is taken to Gettr. Miller said a formal verification policy will soon be released.

So far, the site is where Twitter’s “reply guys” have finally found themselves as the main characters. That’s why Rogan’s news got so much excitement in Gettr-verse — it could use a little more star power, especially from someone who wants to dive into battle. The popular Internet types on the site don’t seem to really interact with each other — you can’t get the right-wing equivalent of David Shor and Justice Democrats arguing over the finer points of coalition politics — and many The big name feeds are just cross-posted from Twitter. Because they seem to almost all agree with each other — anti-mask, pro-Trump — there’s not much to say after a while. “People are more polite. It’s a fun experience,” Miller said. The “polite” atmosphere is in the viewer’s eye.Earlier in December, Miller posted a cartoon of a Christmas elf who hanging in a noose behind Hillary Clinton; it seems to be an allusion to Jeffrey Epstein. “‘It’s time!'” he wrote.

Gettr is part of a suitably conservative-media ecosystem that could see a banner year in 2022. Gettr, Parler, Rumble, and Gab — every app loved by the right wing — have had their moment in the spotlight. But the midterms are coming, then the 2024 campaign will ramp up. While Big Tech suppresses COVID-19 and election misinformation, sites with more permissible posting rules can be attractive to celebrities on the right. It may be just something which becomes a gathering place.

Parler, which started in 2018, claims it has twenty million users, more than Gettr, which boasts only nearly four million. Parler was effectively taken offline following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, when Amazon Web Services stopped hosting the site. It has since found a new host and tried to recalibrate. In February, the site’s founding investor, GOP megadonor Rebekah Mercer, fired Parler’s CEO, who later claimed she was pushed after pushing for stricter content moderation around QAnon and neo -Nazi posts. Mercer has since hired George Farmer, the son of an Oxford-educated Tory — and wife of conservative commentator and Cardi B Twitter-beefer Candace Owens — to run the site. Parler returned to Apple’s App Store in May. This winter, the company reported twenty million dollars in new funding; in January, Farmer told Kara Swisher that she wasn’t worried about the new influx of Gettr celebrities. (Recently, Melania Trump launched an NFT project in partnership with Parler. But honestly, who knows how to parse that?)
