In a friendly interview Thursday night with Fox News host and once -informal presidential adviser Sean Hannity, Trump was directly asked if he called the National Guard on Jan. 6, 2021, to help with the crackdown. of violence in Washington, DC
“One hundred percent, and a lot of people have proven it,” Trump replied. “And they rejected it … Nancy Pelosi rejected it, and she’s in charge of the Capitol.”
Trump first made this baseless claim, which was immediately debunked, in February 2021. Nearly a year later, he still says “we wouldn’t have had January 6 as we know it” if not for his political opponents.
“There wasn’t any problem, but they denied it, telling you everything,” Trump said, referring to both Pelosi and Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. If it weren’t for those Democrats, he continued, “You don’t have any problems. This is really a good day.”
As for the crowd he addressed that day, Trump made it feel like a summer of love in January:
“It was a lot of love there. Believe me, there was a lot of love and a lot of friendship, and people who love our country. They are great people,” he said, addressing the colleague’s Hannity’s Tucker Carlson, who announced last week that one of the alleged Oath Keepers hit by seditious conspiracy charges was an “utterly patriotic American.”
Trump didn’t bother to mention the hundreds of felony cases that have been filed, and so has Hannity.
Hannity also did not ask Trump a bread-and-butter question about the 2020 election, perhaps influenced by the Jan. 6 committee that released texts on Thursday showing him urging the then-White House press secretary Kayleigh McEneny to get the then president to remove the “stolen election talk.”
For his part, Trump seems to have put a little distance between him and his more violent supporters who came out on Jan. 6, saying “This is a protest against the election that they consider completely rigged.”
