Former President Donald Trump publicly endorsed several Republican politicians vying for re-election in Texas this year at a rally in Conroe on Saturday night, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Abbott and Paxton – with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, who are both ready for election again this year-spoke to the crowd before Trump’s appearance. Texas Republicans have expressed their support for the former president and his policies, which Abbott said he was, “the only governor in U.S. history who has built a wall on our border.”

Abbott went on to build a wall on Trump’s border using a combination of state funding and public donations. In his speech, Abbott said the state uses the same contractors proposed by the Trump administration.

The rally was held in Montgomery County – the county where Trump performed best in the 2020 election. Among those in attendance was Republican County Judge Mark Keough, who also supported the former president in a speech earlier in the evening.

Trump took to the stage around 7:30 p.m. and delivered a nearly one-and-a-half-hour speech, beginning with the former president’s emphasis on the importance of the upcoming election in November.

“Nine months from now, the people of this state will send a thunderous message,” he said. “You tell them to ‘don’t mess with Texas,’ because Texas never turns blue.”

Trump then expressed his support for Abbott, Paxton, Patrick, and Miller, along with several Texas Republicans at the local and state levels.

“They all have my complete and total endorsement,” Trump said.

Thousands gathered at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in support of the 45th president, including Jaz Postrano, 26, who attended his rally with his girlfriend.

Postrano said he was not fully influenced by Trump’s endorsements.

“Right now, I don’t see much action with Greg Abbott,” Postrano said. “I think the abortion law is pretty strict, as far as not being able to abort… if you’re raped or if it’s incest, I feel like it’s very far away.”

Postrano added that he is waiting for Trump to announce another run for office in 2024, which he strongly indicated throughout his speech on Saturday night.

In his speech, Trump repeatedly reiterated the false claim that voter fraud drove him to the 2020 election and outlined some would-be priorities for his hypothetical campaign in 2024, such as an immediate ban on critical theory. race and ensuring that those charged in connection with the U.S. Capitol uprising are treated “fairly.”

“If I run and if I win, we will deal fairly with those people from Jan. 6,” he said. “And if it needs pardon, we’ll give them pardon.”

At least 733 people have been charged in connection with the riot, according to the George Washington University Program on Extremism. At least 64 of the defendants were from Texas, including 10 residents of the Houston area.

Mike Parker, 33, attended the rally with his two children. He said he mostly agreed with Trump’s endorsements, and his speech gave him hope for the future.

“I feel like the red wave is coming and coming,” he said. “A great reset will happen here when it comes to midterms.”
