Former President Donald Trump has not been shy about sharing his opinions on the social media platform Twitter. Here’s a look at Trumps take on Bitcoin shared on Twitter a few years ago.

What Happened: The price of Bitcoin BTC/USD has been very volatile over the past few years. The leading cryptocurrency hit an all-time high in November 2021 before collapsing and falling 65% in 2022 after the bankruptcy of several crypto-related companies such as FTX.

In 2019, Trump shared his opinion about the leading cryptocurrency.

I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and the value is very volatile and based on thin air, Trump tweeted on July 11, 2019.

Trump also called out Libra, a virtual currency previously developed by Meta Platforms META.

If Facebook and other companies want to become a bank, they should seek a new Banking Charter and be subject to all Banking Regulations, like other Banks.

Trump said that the real currency in the United States is the US Dollar, which will remain the most dominant currency anywhere in the world.

As with some of Trump’s other acquisitions, such as the sale of Apple Inc AAPL shares due to complaints about the screen size, investors who have faded from Trump’s opinion may have made some profits.

Years later, Trump would use the power of cryptocurrencies to launch his own decentralized token collection, built on the polygon MATIC/USD blockchain and using Ethereum ETH/USD as a payment option. Many on social media were quick to point out the president has called Bitcoin a scam before.

A $1,000 investment is worth $1,377.53 today based on the $16,737.95 price for Bitcoin at the time of writing. This represents a return of 37.8%.

At its peak of nearly $69,000 in November 2021, a $1,000 investment would have been worth $5,661.33, up 466% from the time of Trumps tweet.
