Donald Glover’s tangled web of Spider-Man connections has to be one of the strangest in the character’s long history. When Sony began casting for the Amazing Spider-Man reboot series in the early 2010s, Donald Glover accidentally threw his name into the conversation for potential Peter Parkers. Glover’s astute observation that Spider-Man’s origins felt like the reality of some Black children caused thousands of fans to view the beloved character with a new perspective. A broken kid from Queens who has to support his aunt after his uncle gets shot? This is not a hard step to take. Because of this, #Donald4spiderman went viral and even caught the attention of Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.
Shortly after that, Marvel happened to create a Black Spider-Man named Miles Morales, and Glover later found his way into the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise as Morales’ uncle, Aaron Davis. Now it looks like Glover’s connection to the Wall crawler will get even more complicated, as he’s set to star as Hypno Hustler in aSpider-Manspin-off movie from Sony. Even if the idea is a stinker, if anyone can survive this movie on charisma alone, Donald Glover is the man for the job.
Donald Glover is set to join Sony Pictures’ universe of Marvel characters, as the star and producer of a film based on the Spider-Man villain Hypno-Hustler. The project is in its earliest stages, with no script or director, but Myles Murphy (Eddie Murphy’s son) is attached to write the screenplay.
The Hypno-Hustler, who first appeared in Marvel comics in 1978, is one of Spider-Man’s lesser-known villains, who has the ability to hypnotize his victims with his guitar. During the day, he is known as Antoine Desloin, lead singer of a band called the Mercy Killers who use their music to rob their audiences.
