Donald L. Niemiec, a resident of Westland, passed from this life on January 3, 2023, at the age of 76.

Donald was Fran’s beloved husband of 50 years. He was the loving father of Karen (David) Knight, Jeanine (Ryan) Lithgow, the late Steven Niemiec, and Timothy (Melissa) Niemiec. He was the beloved grandfather (DziaDzie) of Samantha, Brandon, Hali, Andrew, Nathan, Rebecca, Josie, and Alexander. Donald was the dear brother of Thomas (Christina) Niemiec, Dennis (Carol) Niemiec, Therese (Anthony) Simor, Paulette Niemiec, and Rosanne (Scott) Adams. He was the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews. Donald also leaves several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Don was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan in 1968. He continued his support of the University of Michigan by watching U of M football games on television. In addition to football, he developed a love for baseball. It started when he played baseball for his high school team. She then played softball for the St. Suzanne’s Church as well as her company team in Lambrecht. When his playing days were over, he continued his hobby by watching the Detroit Tigers and his grandchildren play ball. Don enjoyed playing golf, especially with his brothers. In his golf life, his greatest achievement was getting a Hole-in-One on two occasions! Don served his country as an Army Officer during the Vietnam War. He then became a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and PLAV Post 4 & 16. Don was a very active member of the St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Catholic Church. He was a longtime Usher and member of the Men’s Club. He is known for making the best coffee at the monthly pancake breakfast. He served as President and Vice President of his Condominium Association and loved helping out.

His favorite pastime is spending time with his family. Don enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his wife of 50 years. He also likes to vacation with his children and grandchildren. Don planned his schedule to include watching his grandchildren in their extracurricular activities of sports, choir, orchestra and drama. Don loves sweets. He always suggests a trip to an ice cream shop. He loves chocolate milkshakes from Bates with his burger. Jars of chocolate covered with raisins or almonds are a staple in her house. He always had chocolates in his pockets when the grandchildren asked. Don loved celebrating birthdays and holidays with his extended family. He enjoyed Black Jack at the Casino, nightly Rummy games with Fran and Family Texas Hold’em Poker Tournaments.

Don was a man known and loved by many. He is humble and does not want any spotlight for his generosity. Everyone who met Don loved him!

The family will receive visitors at the LJ Griffin Funeral Home, 8809 Wayne Road (at Joy Rd.), on Friday, January 6, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a PLAV Post 16 ceremony at 6:00 pm, and Rosary at 7:00 pm

Don will lie instate at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Catholic Church, 8200 N. Wayne Road (N. of Warren), on Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 10:30 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am
