Late Capitol Officer’s Fiancee Sues Donald Trump And 2 Convicted Rioters

The longtime partner of Brian Sicknick, a US Capitol Police officer who was injured and died after the 2021 uprising in Washington, has filed a lawsuit in federal court against former President Donald Trump and two men who have pleaded guilty to attack on Sicknick.

Sandra Garza, Sicknicks fiancee, alleges wrongful death, conspiracy to violate civil rights, assault and other claims in the lawsuit filed Thursday.

The two rioters, Julian Elie Khater and George Pierre Tanios, pleaded guilty to attacking the police on Jan. 6, 2021, the insurrection. The pair of New Jerseybred childhood friends went to the Capitol that day with supplies like bear spray and pepper spray, which Khater used on the Sicknicks from a distance of less than 8 feet, according to court documents.

Sicknick died on Jan. 7, 2021, after collapsing on the Capitol grounds and being rushed to the hospital. A medical examiner said she suffered multiple strokes and died of natural causes. The Capitol Police later said in a statement that the finding does not change the fact that Officer Sicknick died in the line of duty, bravely defending Congress and the Capitol.

Matt Kaiser, an attorney for Garza, said his suit is about liability. He sought at least $10 million in damages from Trump and the two rioters.

Trump’s refusal to accept that he had lost the 2020 presidential election directly led to Khater and Tanios’ involvement in the insurgency effort, the suit said.

That attack on the United States Capitol cost US Capitol Officer Brian Sicknick, who was bravely defending the cradle of American Democracy, his life, it said. The suit goes on to cite findings from the House select committee that investigated the attack on the Capitol, including criminal referrals it made against Trump.
