Paul Ryan says Donald Trump is a ‘Proven Loser’ whose Career is Declining

Former Republican lawmaker Paul Ryan said Donald Trump is a “proven loser” who is unlikely to get on the 2024 general election ballot.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, the former House speaker and one-time vice presidential candidate said Trump is an obstacle to the GOP and that he sees a way forward without the divisive politician.

“Couple things: He’s fading fast. He’s a proven loser,” said Ryan, 52. “He cost us the House in ’18, he cost us the White House in ’20, he cost us the Senate over and over again , and I think we all know that and I think we’re getting past Trump. I really think that’s the case.”

Ryan then added: “I can’t imagine him getting the nomination, frankly.”

The 54th House speaker, who served from 2015 to 2019, also said he views the long-awaited election of new Speaker Kevin McCarthy as a positive turn of events for the party.

“The thing that saddens me about all the machinations that you saw last week,” he said, is that “most of them are not personal, most of them are about financial responsibility, most of them are about -concerns about spending, inflation and high debt.”

Ryan shared that, while he doesn’t believe “brinkmanship” will solve intra-party squabbling, Republicans are moving in the right direction.

“Republicans have finally regained their moorings in the party of fiscal responsibility and limited government,” he said. “That to me is the good thing I see in all these strange things.”

Ryan’s view of the state of his party comes a week after McCarthy was elected speaker of the House following a historic 15-round vote.

Entering the election for speaker of the House, McCarthy had not yet secured the majority of votes necessary to win but refused to rescind his candidacy, reportedly telling the House Republican Conference before the first vote, “I got this job . We got this crowd, and God dammit we’re going to win now.”

It was the first time since 1923 that no one had won a first-time House speaker election, pointing to fierce divisions within the GOP, which should have easily elected a speaker as the majority party.

McCarthy failed to get enough votes in the 14th round of voting, prompting them to vote on adjournment until Monday, but a final scramble led to the 15th round of votes, who clinched the speakership for McCarthy last Saturday morning.

As the House speaker’s race was locked in a stalemate last week, President Joe Biden called the situation “pretty embarrassing.”

Biden’s comments came as he spoke to reporters last Wednesday, when he explained “the fight against the Speaker is not my problem,” adding, “I just think it’s a little bit embarrassing that it’s taking so long, ” reported Politico. “The rest of the world is looking,” Biden added.
