Donald Glover made a joke about Chevy Chase using the N-word

Donald Glover talked about Chevy Chase using the N-word during his time on Community.

Chase was previously accused of making racial slurs at Glover on the set of the series. According to a 2018 New Yorker profileon Glover, Chase often tried to disrupt his scenes and make racial slurs between takes. In response, Chase said: I’m sorry to hear that Donald perceives me in that light.

Show creator Dan Harmon appeared to corroborate the claims at the time, saying: Chevy was the first to know how good Donald was, and his way of expressing his jealousy was to try to dump Donald.

He added: I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevys non-PC verbiage, and Donald saying, I’m not worried about it.

Speaking at an appearance at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards in New York last night (March 5), Glover referred to Chase’s behavior when he presented the award to Atlanta executive producer Paul Simms.

Chevy Chase once called [Saturday Night Live writer] Herb [Sargent] one of the funniest writers working in television, Glover said on stage [via The Hollywood Reporter] Chevy Chase once called me. Did you know? It’s about Paul.

Later, when Glover recalls hearing about Simms after working on Girls, he mentions Chase again.

I asked Lena [Dunham]Hey, why did you decide to work with Paul [Simms, an executive producer on the HBO hit]? And she goes Honestly, this n**** lets me do whatever I want. And I remember thinking two things. One, Lena uses the N-word very liberally. Who does he think he is, Chevy Chase? And two, that’s the kind of producer I want, he joked.

A rep for Dunham said via The Independent: Donald Glover told a joke referencing Lena Dunham at last night’s WGA Awards. It includes, in effect, language that Lena has never used, and never will. Complete stop.

Meanwhile, Harmon recently hinted that the upcoming Community movie is set to be significantly different from the TV series.
