Donald Trump allegedly raped adviser columnist E Jean Carroll after a chance encounter at an upmarket New York department store and then destroyed her career when she repeatedly lied about the claims, a civil jury has heard in New York on Tuesday.

Opening arguments in Mr Trump’s civil rape trial began in a New York courtroom on Tuesday.

Former Elle magazine columnist E Jean Carroll said the former president raped her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in the mid-1990s.

He first spoke about the allegations in 2019, when Mr Trump was president.

He denied the incident and infamously retorted, Shes not my type.

Now, Ms Carroll is getting her day in court after filing a new lawsuit against her second in November, suing him for both alleged sexual assault and for defaming her by denying that it happened.

The trial comes after New York passed its Adult Survivors Act, which gives victims of sexual abuse a one-year grace period to sue attackers for historical assaults.

Joe Tacopina, who is part of the legal team representing Donald Trump in the rape case of E Jean Carroll, told jurors that you can hate the former president from their opinions of him outside of court but with time and place for that.

But there is a secret time and a place for that. It’s called a ballot box during elections, not here in the court of law.

Both sets of lawyers had three strikes from the remaining 35 jurors.

Judge Kaplan reminded jurors not to do their own research or roam the halls of Bergdorf Goodman.

Jurors were asked if they followed Mr Trump on social media, had a Truth Social or Rumble account, or watched Mr Trump’s reality TV show The Apprentice.

They were also asked if they had read Ms Carrolls Elle magazine advice column Ask E Jean, signed up for her Substack or followed her on social media.

A juror said he believed Mr Trump had been treated unfairly by the press, but said it would not influence their ability to remain impartial.

The original 48 in the courtroom was reduced to 35 at this stage.

Then followed a series of biographical questions for the remaining jurors on their work, where they live, their family life and from which print, broadcast or other media you get your news.

The judges’ answers ranged from Fox News and the Tim Poole podcast to the Provincetown Independent, CBS Evening News and randomly, Google, anything on the internet.

Some said they got their information on social media like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Several others said they don’t watch the news.

Judge Kaplan briefed prospective jurors on key details of the case. He then asked each of them a detailed list of questions to eliminate possible biases.

This included questions about whether they or any member of their family or social circle knew either Mr Trump or Ms Carroll, whether they had any professional dealings with lawyers, or had read, seen or heard anything about in case that could affect their ability to come to an unbiased decision.

All jurors indicated that they were registered to vote. How bout that people, that’s terrific, said Judge Kaplan.

They were also asked if they voted in the 2016 and 2020 elections, donated to Mr Trump, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden, or worked or volunteered on a political campaign.

A small number of jurors who indicated they had political allegiances were impaneled at trial.

Jurors were then asked if they belonged to a range of groups including QAnon, Antifa, Redneck Revolt, The John Brown Gun Club, the Communist Party of USA, the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters, Boogaloo Bois, the Ku Klux Klan or Trump Supporters NYC.

A juror was excused after saying they could not be impartial because of the MeToo anti-harassment movement.
