Former President Donald Trump’s legal issues continue to worsen

As former President Donald Trump enters his third consecutive presidential campaign, he is facing more legal issues than ever. Not only does he face pending felony charges brought by the Manhattan district attorney, but he also faces a federal investigation and a Georgia state investigation.

That’s in addition to a civil lawsuit he lost last month that found he sexually abused and defamed writer E. Jean Carroll.

Manhattan hush money investigation

In April, Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts related to a hush-money scheme involving adult film star Stormy Daniels. He entered a plea of ​​not guilty during his arraignment.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused Trump of hiding damaging information and illegal activity from American voters before and after the 2016 election.

His office alleged three instances of Trump using a catch and kill scheme to hide information. Those payments, according to Bragg, were made illegal by allegedly making false entries in business records.

It could take months, if not more than a year, for Trump to go to trial.

Meanwhile, both sides can prepare their cases and collect evidence that can be used for trial.

Investigation of confidential DOJ records

Ava-joye Burnett of Scripps News reported Tuesday that a grand jury investigating the classified documents case related to Trump reconvened in Washington, DC, after a recess.

The activity came a day after the former president’s lawyers met with Justice Department officials. It’s unclear how close the Department of Justice is to filing charges.

Last August, the Department of Justice confirmed that it had executed a search warrant at Trumps Florida residence to find classified documents stored on the site, including some marked top secret.

Trump has not denied he had the items but insisted he made the documents declassified before leaving office. He also accused the DOJ of conducting the search for political reasons.

Georgia election meddling investigation

There has been an ongoing investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. In March, investigators released a report from a special grand jury.

Many key details of the investigation were not included in the report, but the report said Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should “seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling.

The report added that the grand jury believed that some witnesses had lied in their testimony. Trump was not among those who testified in the Georgia investigation.

The Associated Press reported that Willis could file a lawsuit in August. In a letter, Willis said his staff will work remotely for three weeks in August due to safety concerns. The letter also said he urged judges not to schedule cases during that time.

E. Jean Carroll civil litigation

In May, a jury unanimously found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation of Carroll. According to the jury, Carroll’s legal team proved that Trump sexually abused her but did not prove that he raped her. They also found Trump liable for defamation because of his statements on social media that Carroll’s claims were both “a hoax and a con job,” statements they found he made with actual that malice.

Trump is appealing the decision.

Meanwhile, following the comments made at a CNN town hall, Carroll’s legal team said Trump is doubling down on defaming him. During the town hall, Trump called Carroll a whack job.

The revised suit is asking for $10 million, up from the $5 million he was previously awarded.
