Trump’s lawyer says the former president will never take a plea deal

Alina Habba, a lawyer for former President Trump, said Trump will not take a plea deal in connection with his federal indictment on handling classified documents.

Habba, who is not representing Trump in the classified documents case, told Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday” that he “can’t imagine” the former president would take a plea deal. He said people only accept plea deals if the defense doesn’t stand a chance or if he did something wrong, which he maintains Trump did not.

“I know I would never advise that, especially when he’s done nothing wrong,” Habba said. “Take a plea deal to get something out of the way. That is an admission of guilt. He will never plead guilty because there is nothing wrong with declassifying documents that take documents in your negotiations [National Archives and Records Administration].”

“The only thing wrong is the raid on his home and the complete dual tier justice system we see here, when the Biden family is treated completely differently than the Trump family,” he added.

The Justice Department indicted Trump in a damning 37-count indictment last week over his handling of classified materials after leaving the White House. Evidence collected by the Justice Department revealed that the former president had documents containing nuclear and military secrets and the charges carry decades of prison terms.

Trump has maintained that he has the right to obtain these documents, saying the investigation is politically motivated against him but a recording shows him admitting that he could not declassify the documents once he left the White House . Habba reiterated that he believed the former president “did nothing wrong”.

“Nonsense. You plead when you do something wrong or when you don’t have a shot. Our defense is strong,” said Habba.
