Donald Trump has no desire to be a speaker of the House of Representatives, a spokesman said, after the former president discussed the unknown idea.
Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, is the current speaker in the House. Republicans under minority leader Kevin McCarthy hope to retake the chamber next year.
Trump was ousted from the White House in January. He retained control of the Republican party and he publicly changed another run for the presidency in 2024.
Under congressional rules, the speaker of the House should not be a sitting member of Congress, even if all of them have been.
However, talk about the unlikely political comebacks has spread among Trump supporters since his former adviser Steve Bannon raised it and since Trump called it very interesting last week.
On Friday, McCarthy inadvertently encouraged such a conversation when he told Fox News: You know, I’ve talked to President Trump a lot of times, he told me he wanted to be a spokesman, and I think he should be president .
A spokesman later said the California representative deliberately said that Trump thinks McCarthy should be speaking.
On Monday, the former president was asked about the idea in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network. Characteristically, he failed to completely deny it.
So, Trump said, I heard the talk and get more. But it’s not something I’ll consider but there’s definitely a lot of talk about it.
I have a good relationship with Kevin, and hopefully we will do everything traditionally.
Trump pivoted to his often repeated lie that his defeat of Joe Biden was the result of election fraud, then said about the notion that he could be the spokesman: So I saw the talk about there but it is nothing I consider.
On Tuesday, Punchbowl News poured cold water on the story.
No, it said, you don’t have to be a member of Congress to be a speaker. No, it will not happen. It’s impossibly difficult for Trump to be a spokesman, even if it’s theoretically possible.
However, Punchbowl said, it asked Jason Miller, Trump’s spokesman to be released, if Trump wanted to be spokesman.
Trump, Miller said, has zero desire to be a spokesman.
