Some Democrats have called for Garland to conduct a comprehensive review over the past four years to expose instances where they say President Donald Trump has used the department to commit political crimes and protect his interests and the his allies.
Garland, who spoke with reporters at the Justice Department, said he was careful to protect career department employees from changing political administrations.
“I don’t want people to think of the department’s career with a new group coming in and immediately applying a political one,” Garland said.
Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz announced last month that his office launched an investigation into the department’s use of subpoenas to receive telephone records and metadata from journalists and at least two Democratic members of Congress. .
Garland said that as a leader, “we always look at what has happened before. The IG is in front of him with a lot of” investigations, adding that he will review any recommendations from Horowitz.
“I just don’t want to prejudge anything. It’s not fair to current employees,” Garland said.
