In Iowa County That Heavyly Supported Trump, Republican Voters Weighed Out Other 2024 Expectations

ORANGE CITY, Iowa Former President Donald Trump remains very strong here in Sioux County, where he won 81.8% of the vote Novembers. But while other Republicans are laying the groundwork for potential presidential bids, GOP constituencies appear to be open to hearing them.

This area in the state that traditionally starts the nomination race is deeply religious and leads the country for the proportion of residents of Dutch origin. Interviews with more than two dozen voters, including some who remained convinced that Mr. Trump had won the election, show a willingness to move forward.

Many of his policies were positive for the country, but his personality got in the way, said Tom Van Den Bosch, a retired high school counselor who twice voted for Mr. Trump. I want him to stay in a background role and let others run with the right value system.

Mr. Van Den Bosch said he thinks Republicans need to consider the nomination of a woman or a minority candidate in 2024 to show that it is not just a white male party. He was intrigued by Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is Black, and Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota.

Sioux County, a rural area with many small cities in northwestern Iowa, helped win powers in Iowa caucuses for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in 2008, former Pennsylvania Senator who Rick Santorum in 2012 and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas in 2016. All three won in the province, though none went on to win the GOP presidential nomination.
